The Art Factory: From Roman Quarries to Canova
A Journey Through Sculpture and Time
Developed as a university project for the Basilica Palladiana within the Planning of Major Exhibitions and Musealizations course at Politecnico di Milano, The Art Factory explores the evolution of craftsmanship in sculpture, following a chronological path from Roman quarries to Antonio Canova’s Gypsotheca, bridging historical techniques with contemporary museography.
Our team was responsible for the entire exhibition concept, from spatial design to visitor experience. The exhibition balances the raw aesthetics of the quarry with Canova’s refined sculptures, creating a dynamic contrast. In addition to curating the spatial experience, we developed the graphic identity and merchandising, designing tickets, signage, and collectible items that reinforced the exhibition’s theme. Interactive elements, such as sculpture-inspired finger food and packaging, further enriched the visitor experience.
The exhibition was structured around two thematic paths, guiding visitors through the evolution of sculptural artistry:
1. The Classical Path (Roman & Greek Influence) – Tracing ancient sculptural traditions, highlighting raw materials, carving techniques, and artistic philosophies.
2. The Canovian Neoclassical Path – Showcasing Antonio Canova’s sculptural techniques, focusing on plaster modeling and the transition from classical to neoclassical ideals.
By merging curation, spatial storytelling, and branding, The Art Factory reinterprets sculptural traditions and techniques, offering visitors an immersive and multisensory experience within the historic Basilica Palladiana.
